Kennel cough

Well on top of everything else I've now come down with kennel cough. I'm not feeling too poorly in myself but am coughing a bit. Mum took me to the vet to make sure because she wanted to be sure we didn't come into contact with other dogs if it was. My glands are up and the vet gave me a jab of something to ease my cough plus some antibiotics.

Apparently there is a 3-day cough going round the park - so we're not sure what makes the diagnosis of kennel cough and what is 'just a cold'. Ho hum - means I can't go training for a couple of weeks so I will have to work on my special party trick for their Christmas party - which I think I'll be allowed to go to on 21st December.

Luckily one of my best pals has recently had this cough (although I've not seen him for a fair while so I don't think he gave it to me) and his mum says that we can still go out on walkies together. So I'm not totally confined to barracks which is a big relief.

Have any of you had kennel cough? What did you have to do? Walkies at 5am to avoid other dogs is all very well in the summer but we're (read, mum) too wussy to go out in the dark on our own at the mo.

Oh dear Charlie, I think you must have a nice vet and you think of anything so that you can go and see her? My mum has a cough at the moment - I wonder if she has kennel cough. My friend told me that if you press your neck just above your collar (where your adam's apple is) if you do cough instantly, you have kennel cough. If that doesn't make you cough, it is just a 'normal' cough.

Hrm I DO get lots of nice comments from the vet and he DOES give me biscuits...maybe you have a point Rufus! Now why did you say about pressing the neck?! Mum has been hammering me there and I'm not coughing - so perhaps i've just got a normal cough? I'm hardly coughing at all really, just when I get a bit excited.

Does this mean I don't have to avoid other dogs so much? Am getting hearty food as mum doesn't want me to lose any more weight. and these odd stinky garlic cloves. supposed to be good for a cold. Hrm, I stink though. And not in a nice, fox poo, kind of way.

Soooo sorry we won't meet on Sunday Ellie - boooo. We will have to arrange something for the new year and hopefully I will be 100% better.

My mum has a cold too, so feels for your mums.

Hey charlie. Don't eat too many garlic cloves because they like onions are toxic to dogs.

I had kennel cough when I was just 3months old and it turned into pneumonia because I was so young.

It does sound like kennel cough as you get it when you are excited. Some kids benelyn helps sooth the throat.

I think Pesto has it at the momemnt because when she got ill a dog at the vet had just been diagnosed with it :(

It really isn't serious unless the dogs are old or young. Get your mum to keep an eye on you as you are still thin is may effect you a bit more.

All the best
Hugs

We've swapped to a tincture of garlic and echinacea which seems to be doing the trick. I'm much less stinky :-)

Hope Pesto feels better soon. Your folks must have been pretty freaked out when you got it Ziggi.

Haven't had to have any Benylin so far as I'm really quite fine and hardly coughing at all. In fact I'm bouncing around like a loony - reminding mum of me being a puppy stuck indoors this time last year!

Sorry to hear you have kennel cough. I've never had it. Mom feeds me a BARF diet - Bones and Raw Food. I love turkey necks and chicken. She also gets me Omas Pride Mixes. She thinks this helps keep me healthy.

I used to eat raw food too til I ate a tennis ball and the vet said I should go to something a bit more easily digestible in future. I used to eat whole rabbits!
