Complications
The vet called us. Turns out this is a complication of his previous surgery. As I understand it the bowel had herniated through a hole in the omentum - and there was significant inflammation and damage. She said it was a big op and that he is at risk in both the short and long term. She said it was good to have operated today and he has come round and hopefully will be coming home tomorrow, but then will have to be kept very still and quiet in order to heal. Poor boy. It's terrifying to think that this could affect him forever - hopefully that forever will be a really long time. If anyone else has heard of anything similar i'd be grateful to hear from you.

Oh Sally I am so sorry to hear Charlie is ill again. Expecially since he was so much better.
Paws and fingers all crossed here that all goes smoothly and he is back to his normal self soon.

Hi Charlie and Sally,
So, so sorry to hear about Charlie's latest hurdle and all the stress and anxiety that must come with it. Unfortuntely as you know from the Gunfields site, I have no knowledge about animals at all but the same thing can happen in humans and I am guessing it may have similar implications?
If so, it is certainly great that he had immediate surgery and is a big plus in terms of prognosis. Also, although shocking, the speed of onset is a good thing indicating this was an acute problem, dealt with immediately.
In the short term the issues will likely relate to adequate healing and infection risk having had toxins floating around in there and then surgery.
In the longer term the issues wil probably relate to how much bowel they had to remove and therefore nutrition/absorption etc in the future.
I would imagine that the vet will advise on diet for short and long term, and all being well long term should hopefully be the normal long term expected...
Please take, leave or adapt this human related info as feels right and appropriate for you. Hope it helps a bit though.

Thanks everyone - that is very encouraging Katherine thanks. Been v upset all day but trying to feel a bit more positive. Poor chap - hating to think of him alone all night but hopefully he is so doped up he won't notice.
oh Sally.......our thoughts are with you and Charlie......I find that it is always a little eaiser when you know what the problem is and fingers and toes crossed that with the rest,care and loving you will give him, Charlie will be back to himself again

Hi Sally i do hope everything goes well, fingers crossed here too... although not quite sure how your going to keep him calm and quiet if he feels better after the op!!
So very sorry to hear the distressing news about Charlie. Sounds as though you have a good vet though taking such immediate action.
Our dear vizsla took suddenly ill and we took him to the vets who couldn't find anything wrong with him and sent him home but he died the next day - the worst day of my life and I was heartbroken.
So thank god you have such a good vet - follow her advice to the letter and with lots of loving and prayers your wonderful Charlie will be well again and you will have lots of precious, fun years together.
Come on Charlie we are all praying for your recovery! Looking forward to enjoying a short video of you having fun again.

Oh Jan, what a nightmare. I do think we've been lucky with this vet. I have every confidence in her. We'll keep going to her for the follow up and will do everything we can for him to speed up his recovery.
